We held a presentation at Gayton Social Club on Sunday 20 January 2013 where Megan’s Challengers presented to Sister Teresa Brown a cheque for the fantastic amount of £15,700.00 to Macmillan Palliative Daycare at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (King’s Lynn).  This total is a combination of the monies raised from the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge, the Summer Event at Gayton Social Club (see Events) and also some of the Sledding Challenge donations.

Teresa said the new garden would include benches, a patio, and a range of pots and plants, including plants to attract butterflies.  “We always used to have a garden in the palliative unit, but the extension of the treatment centre means we are having to move and therefore need a new garden,” she added.  “We want the garden to reflect the kind of person Megan was.  “It’s very important for our patients to have somewhere in nice weather for them to sit and chill out and have a bit of me-time. There’s a lot going on here so for them it’s conducive to their care to have a nice restful area where they can go to sit and get some fresh air.  “Megan’s Challenge have raised a lot of money for us, and we’re extremely grateful, so we want to make it as nice as we can.”

On Saturday 27 April 2013 the Macmillan Centre had it’s official opening and we where invited to see the new unit and the completed garden (see photos above). The thought, care and hard work that has gone into the garden is fantastic.  Seating areas have been introduced alongside hardwood timber planters with butterfly friendly plants such  jasmine and honeysuckle.  The main feature for us is the amazing steel screen outside the palliative unit with a butterfly and leaf design in memory of Megan.

Big thank you to Shaun at DGM Joinery for supplying the hardwood planters, also to the lovely Teresa Brown (Palliative Day Care) who we now call a friend,  Richard Humphries (Communications Manager, QEH) and Aditya ‘Adi’ Kashikar (Capital Projects Officer, QEH) for all your kindness and support.

Also not forgetting a big thank you to all the people who donated funds or took part in the challenges – the continuing support we receive means a lot to us.
